Rainbow Hopping Bug
Bush Walks

As part our our interest of Exploration, we want to share our love of bush walking with our Rainbow Hopping Bug community.

Here, we are sharing some of our favourite bush walking spots in and around Sydney - and we have also included lots of suggestions from our little hopper families too!

If you are looking for a challenging walk that will take you through some amazing bushland, then this one is for you. It takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete and it would best suit walkers aged 7+. It can get steep in parts, but you will be rewarded with spectacular views along the way.

It is recommended to get someone to pick you up when you reach Berowra Waters, unless you want an uphill climb back to the main road. Remember to take snacks and lots of water!

Located in St Ives on Sydney’s upper North Shore and covering an area of 123 hectares, this is a garden with a difference. There is a range of activities and bush walking tracks for everyone to enjoy, and a wildflower nursery and educational programs, such as a Junior Rangers Club.

Admission is free and it is open all year round (aside from the main public holidays: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday)

This is one of the few remaining pieces of the Blue Gum high forest in the Sydney Basin. It is an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a stunning rainforest experience.

The walking track is family friendly and full of adventures e.g. there are some steep parts and you have to use stepping stones to cross streams!

It is well worth the effort and we highly recommend it because it has very quickly become a family favourite.

There is nothing better than getting outside for fresh air and a walk in nature. Lane Cove National Park is a convenient and beautiful location nestled in the heart of Sydney’s North Shore, moments away from Chatswood CBD.

Along the walk, you might see the odd water dragon or hear the deafening sounds of kookaburra’s and cockatoos. There is a cafe, playground, BBQ facilities and even the opportunity to hire a boat and row your way down the river! It’s a beautiful spot to have a picnic and watch the world go by.

Narabeen Lakes is a really lovely walk, which is dog and pram friendly, so everyone can enjoy the outing. The whole circuit is 8.5km and you can choose to tackle it in one go, or do smaller sections at a time. There are cafes along the way and it’s an easy walking track.

There is always a team of ducks that roost at the side of the lake or waddle into the water, which are lovely to watch. You also have the option to rent out a kayak or take your paddle board for a spin!

The Coal Loader in Waverton has been revamped in recent years and is a wonderful place to explore. It has a sustainable garden, native bee’s, a street library (take a book and swap it for another!), chickens, places to run wild and interesting walks that will take you through the actual coal loader tunnels and bush walks around Ball’s head.

It is filled with history and has a lovely view across the harbour. It even has a piano you can play!

Please note: Families with prams can walk around the top of the coal loader, but the actual walk through the tunnels and the bush walk on the other side, is not pram friendly.
